Awards Spotlight – The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards 2022

As one of London’s top responsible business awards, The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards celebrates businesses that are achieving excellence in social impact. Recognising the vital role businesses across every sector have to play in this important topic, these awards recognise everything from responsible recruitment through to procurement and giving practices. In fact, the whole event aims to celebrate success and inspire others by showcasing how the best in business tackle the plethora of challenging social issues we face today.

Whether your business is large or small, these awards give you the opportunity to shine a light on your achievements. So perhaps your company champions diversity, or runs a successful volunteering or social mobility scheme? The Dragon Awards recognises businesses going the extra mile to make a difference to society, so you will receive the credit you deserve for improving people’s lives by operating responsibly.

Like what you see? Then you’re probably wondering what categories The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards has on offer.

Categories

Lord Mayor’s Award for Advancing Socio-economic Diversity in Business

New for 2022, this category is perfect for companies that are boosting socio-economic diversity at senior levels and can demonstrate leadership in achieving equity of progression; where high performance is valued over ‘fit and polish’. This exciting new category is sure to be popular with both SMEs and large businesses alike, and links with Lord Mayor Vincent Keaveny’s mayoral theme of People and Purpose.

Inclusive Employment Award

Does your business actively seek to remove employment or progression barriers for disadvantaged, underrepresented or minority groups? Perhaps you’ve made it your mission to create a more diverse and inclusive workforce? This category celebrates companies who have committed to inclusivity.

Boosting Social Impact Award

Celebrating businesses that support others, this category will be awarded to the business that has multiplied its own social impact by providing support to small businesses, social enterprises and charities on their mission to launch, grow or become more sustainable.

Heart of the City Award

Is your business at the beginning of its social impact journey in Greater London? Perhaps you’ve put strong foundations in place to deliver sustainable impact in the future? If your strategic approach started within the last three years, then this category is a great choice for you.

“The Lord Mayor’s Dragon Awards celebrates excellence in social impact both within Greater London and nationally for the Lord Mayor’s Award categories. Best of all, they are completely free to enter.”

Innovation Award

Have you found a new way to think about a deeply entrenched issue? Sought to drive impact on a long-standing issue? Or perhaps your business utilises its unique position to address issues which have been overlooked before? The Innovation category is the place for you. This award is for businesses that recognise the benefits of innovation – both as an important driver of sustainable social impact and as a way to engage their workforce.

Community Partners Award

Are you part of a community organisation? Perhaps you’ve run successful initiatives working with companies to achieve excellence in social impact? This category recognises good practice and innovation in building and maintaining effective cross-sector partnerships that benefit Greater London.

For over 30 years, the Dragon Awards has attracted high-quality applications from a variety of organisations across London and the UK. Alongside a highly-coveted Dragon Award statue to celebrate success with employees, clients and competitors alike, winners will also benefit from a fully-edited video of their initiative, as well as additional support securing press and media coverage.

All applicants will be invited to The Mansion House in September, where the winners will receive their prestigious ‘Dragon’ from Vincent Keaveny, the Lord Mayor of the City of London.

“This year’s Dragon Awards gives us an opportunity to recognise businesses across the capital which are working hard to drive socio-economic diversity, with all the benefits that brings for companies, individuals and society as a whole.

I am really looking forward to being able to recognise companies which find creative and innovative ways to benefit the communities they operate in, and would urge businesses large or small to get their application in and help us celebrate their achievements.”

Vincent Keaveny, Lord Mayor of London.

How to enter

If you’d like to join the likes of Penguin Random House, Arsenal Football Club and PwC, these awards are completely free to enter and will be open for applications until 31st May 2022. What have you got to lose? Previous winners have reported winning new contracts, improved internal relationships, stronger reputations and increased PR as a result of taking part in the scheme.

Entry forms and full eligibility criteria can be found on the Dragon Awards website, but each entry requires a written award submission which answers specific questions relating to your initiative, including evidence of the difference your initiative has already made – through both qualitative and quantitative data, along with interesting plans you have in store for the future. Each category has its own clear guidance and information on word limits, outlined in the guidance documents online. It’s a really good idea to read and familiarise yourself with these, as it’s vital to help with the all-important judges’ points.

It can feel daunting when you first put pen to paper – so you might find these tips helpful. The biggest piece of advice is to make sure that you are telling a story. You have one opportunity to get the judges attention – and keep it! Also, be aware of making unsubstantiated claims like “we received excellent feedback” – judges won’t be impressed if your entry lacks evidence. It’s also really common to fall into the trap of focusing on what you did and not what you achieved – it’s important to find a blend of the two.
